Toshiba President, Atsutoshi Nishida, officially announces his company are to stop HD-DVD production.

The company pulled backing due to "recent major changes in the market", adding they will "provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products".

Many see this as the end of the costly format war between the two high definition disc technologies, HD-DVD and Blu Ray.

The success of Blu Ray is undoubtedly connected to the Playstation 3, capable of playing the high definition content.

When announcing today's decision to end HD-DVD production and manufacture, Toshiba President, Atsutoshi Nishida, said his decision was "agonising".
